How to clean your Sterling Silver Jewelry

In this post I will be sharing my knowledge on how to clean your Sterling silver Jewelry. I will also be sharing some general information regarding sterling silver jewelry. I hope you find this article helpful in keeping your sterling silver jewelry clean and fabulous!

First a little bit of info about Sterling silver.

Pure silver, also called fine silver, is relatively soft, very malleable, and easily damaged. Pure silver is commonly combined with other metals to produce a more durable product. The most popular of these alloys is sterling silver, which consists of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper. Although any metal can make up the 7.5 percent non-silver portion of sterling, centuries of experimentation have shown copper to be its best companion, improving the metal’s hardness and durability without affecting its beautiful colour. The small amount of copper added to sterling has very little effect on the metal’s value. Instead, the price of the sterling silver jewelry is affected by the labour involved in making the item, the skill of the craftsperson, and the detail of the design.

Sterling silver is plated a lot of the time as an industry standard. I personally disagree with this practice since you are unable to see the natural state of the sterling silver when purchased. The plating will wear off and sometimes what’s underneath is not so pretty. This is why I never plate my sterling silver jewelry and always recommend purchasing your sterling silver jewelry in its natural state with no plating. This way you can be sure of the quality in the sterling silver jewelry.
My helpful tips on how to clean your sterling silver jewelry.
Your Sterling Silver Jewellery will look its best worn daily or as often as you can. Proper washing with even soap and warm water can make a world of difference in the way your sterling silver jewelry shines. Check out my how to clean your gemstone jewelry blog for regular upkeep of jewelry.
If you notice your sterling silver jewelry has tarnished after leaving it in the jewellery box or you would just like to bring up the shine in your jewelry. I do recommend using a silver cleaner every so often. *If your sterling silver jewellery has been purposefully oxidized as part of the design like the rings in the image below, I would NOT recommend silver cleaners as they will damage the design.
Also I would like to mention it is best to  avoid exposing your silver to household chemicals when cleaning with bleach or ammonia.  Also while swimming in chlorinated water, as these chemicals can damage your sterling silver jewelry.
The #1 cleaning solution I recommend  is Hagerty silver cleaner,  it is one of the best cleaners I have used hands down!
I will say this is a fast reacting solution and I would not leave any jewelry in the solution any more than just a few minutes. If you don’t see the results you’d like after a few minutes I would recommend visiting your trusted Jeweller. For more on finding a trusted jeweller read my how to find a trusted jeweller blog here.  After a few minutes in the cleaning solution rinse your jewelry in clean water and pat dry on some paper towel.

To bring up the most shine in your sterling silver jewellery I always recommend a polishing cloth. Such as the one in the image below. It makes huge difference as far as I’m concerned.  Most polishing clothes are less than ten dollars so it is a relatively cheap investment.

Its a good idea to invest in a jewelry box to store your sterling silver jewelry especially if there are gemstones in your jewelry.  Purchasing a good jewelry box will help minimize scratches and other damage.  I really like the jewelry box below and totally recommend it. I love the tiny compartments and ring holders and love that it also holds your necklaces. The colour is so fabulous and the fabric is super soft! don’t you think?
